New Artist: Doji

Uncategorized

Today, I have a brand new artist that I think we are going to be seeing a lot more of. Meet Doji, a young artist based out of Los Angeles that has a fantastic debut single to share with us titled “Foreign Fields”. Below, he gives us a little bit more insight into his music.

Name: Doji

Age: 20

Hometown: Hockessin, Delaware

Where did “Doji” come from?:

The summer before high school I went to go to Tibet with a monk who gave me the nickname Doji. He told me it was a lucky name, but I think it has something to do with something called varja too. There’s something special about not being entirely sure what it means. My name is kind of like a souvenir or reminder that this crazy trip actually did happen.

Musical Influences:

I listen to all kinds of music nowadays, much like everyone else. But I can say that the first music I remember hearing include Believe by Cher, 1979 by The Smashing Pumpkins, The Sound of Music, Simon and Garfunkel.

What was the inspiration for Foreign Fields (musical or otherwise) and why did you pick it as your first single?:

Last year I was obsessed with getting toy keyboards and I eventually got this little Casio keyboard from ’85. It’s such a nice writing tool because it’s so barebones and forces you to keep things simple. One day I challenged myself to come up with something really simple and memorable. That’s how the rhythmic exhaling in the intro began.

I have a collection of half-written songs and ‘Foreign Fields’ happened to be the newest addition. Although I intended to finish the older songs first, this one kept coming back to me until I eventually became obsessed with it.

What should we be expecting in 2016?:

I’m working on some music videos at the moment. They are pretty fresh ideas and hard to capture but there should be something coming out around mid-February. Other than that, I plan on consistently releasing singles that explore new sounds.

We are The Lucky Velvet, so do you have any good luck charms or rituals?:

I used to wear this bloodstone necklace that had a several hundred year old Chinese coin. It was lost for a while, but it’s recently resurfaced and I haven’t taken it off since.

This single gives us all of the classic elements of indie-pop, and then adds in a little extra. The vocals in the track are just enough to compliment the tracking, so you really get to enjoy every part of the song as a whole. This is important because there are a lot of intricate things to appreciate here. The backbeat keeps the whole thing moving and it’s what will get you grooving. And then because you all know how much I love vocals, there is a break in the tracking to let you appreciate those leads vocals. This is a very impressive debut single from Doji, and I am intrigued to see what comes next. You can listen to “Foreign Fields” right here.

Q&A With Allday + A Playlist

Uncategorized
With a new year comes many new things, and today I want to take this opportunity to introduce you to something that is completely new to The Lucky Velvet. ~new year, new me~ This is new in the way that I have never once featured a rap artist before. However, I think Allday brings a little something new to the table with the way he blends rap with an indie vibe. This style is something I think is only going to continue to get more popular, and this Australian rapper is paving the way. It’s clearly working for him, because this guy has had a huge year being featured in several major publications, debuting his first LP “Startup Cult” in the States, and doing a US tour with Modsun, just to name a few things. 2016 is set to be an even bigger year, so I thought I would catch up with him before the ball really gets rolling. I got to ask him a few questions, and he compiled a playlist of artists for his dream festival lineup exclusively for The Lucky Velvet. Now that I have rambled just enough, here is what he had to say.

Q&A With Allday

The Lucky Velvet: I feel like your music doesn’t fit the conventional sound of rap music- it’s been said that you have a much more “indie aesthetic” to your sound which is one of my favorite things about your music. Is there anyone you draw inspiration from that people might be surprised by?
Allday: Thank you! I guess I grew up listening to Mobb Deep AND David Bowie. That’s what makes my music and me a bit weird. Sometimes it’s straight Hip Hop and other times it’s like, other stuff.

TLV: You were on Troye Sivan’s track “for him.”- how did that come about?
A: I think we have mutual friends. We followed each other on twitter. He sent the song, the song was rad, I rapped on it and yeah. He’s a cool dude and I love the fact he’s basically the first openly gay pop star. Wait there was that dude from American Idol too. But one of the first. I think because of how successful he’s becoming and how good his music is, it’s an important thing.

TLV: Are there any collaborations you are dying to do?
A: I want to rap on a Kanye beat. I want to do a song with Lil Wayne. There are a lot of high up collaborations I’ll hopefully tick off one day.

TLV: I saw an entire BuzzFeed article dedicated to your Instagram, and think it was a pretty important article because you have some great material going on there. I also see that you reply to a lot of comments on your posts- is it important to you to stay connected with your fans?
A: It’s important to me, I have a special relationship with the people who listen to me, I hate saying “fans”, they’re just my friends. That sounds stupid but they already know me from my songs and when people come to show after show, I know them and I do get to become friends with lots of people. I put in a lot of hours trying to talk to people, listen to people’s raps or whatever else. I love when people say “Wow I didn’t think you’d reply”, that makes me happy.

TLV: I saw your 2014 goals list on Instagram- what does the 2016 list look like? Still trying to stay steezy?
A: I want to make inroads into the USA in 2016, but most importantly I want to hit my stride with my sound and make a lot of good music.

TLV: What should the fans be looking forward to for the next year? Touring? New music?
A: Album then HEAPS of other music. I’ll tour. Probably lots of annoying snapchat stories. Who knows what will happen! Maybe I’ll fall in love with a girl and make a double album of love songs on acoustic guitar. Hopefully just lots of rad stuff that people can be a part of.

TLV: I recently saw your interview for Rolling Stone’s “RS Live”, and I found it really interesting when you said, “I often write about love and doing drugs, stuff that’s relevant to my life… Sometimes I’m like, ‘Fuck, I wanna say something that matters.’ But saying stuff that matters doesn’t sound cool. That’s my battle.” You’ve been very successful with the music you’ve put out so far, but is this something you’re looking to focus on as your music progresses?
A: Just to clarify, I meant “cool” to me, not cool as in popular. I love Travis Scott & PartyNextDoor and that type of escapist party music. So for me, it’s very natural to make songs about love and drugs. It’s what i do without thinking. Music is entertainment. I don’t necessarily feel a responsibility to talk about anything “important” any more than Quentin Tarantino should feel a responsibility to quit making his gory films to make documentaries about social issues. That being said, sometimes I have opinions and if I want to make a political or social commentary I will.

TLV: We are The “Lucky” Velvet, so do you have an lucky charms or pre-show rituals?
A: We used to kiss our tour manager’s bald head but then he quit because he got a better job. I usually stretch and have a couple of drinks because I hate performing sober.

Allday Playlist: Dream Festival Lineup

This is a short playlist of artists that are on the list for Allday’s dream festival lineup, along with a short explanation of why these artists were chosen.

1. OZ – Act Like Rihanna
Everybody wants a girl who acts like Rihanna

2. Roy Wood$ – Drama Ft. Drake
Another really cool dude with the signature OVO sound

3. Japanese Wallpaper – Breathe In Ft. WAFIA
A genius producer.

4. Anna of the North – The Dreamer
It’s like pop but with some weird modern R&B aesthetic. I like it.

5. Shura – Touch
I don’t know much about Shura but this song is cool.

6. D. TIFFANY – aqua boo
This is the type of song you listen to when on drugs that makes you feel higher.

7. Odwalla88 – Cool Beat
I’m not sure if I like this but it is different, and not enough things are different

8. air pop –  for the boys (phone demo)
Sounds pretty good for a phone demo

9. Faze Miyake – Ice Cold Ft. Inga Copeland
Kind of freaky but kind of sweet.

10. BLADEE1000 + Black Kray – Friday Nite
Swedish people are good at music, actually they’re good at most things.

If You Listen To Nothing Else Today

Hello loves, it’s been a while but I am here and ready to bring you into 2016 and beyond with the best tunes, new and old! Happy holidays to everyone out there, I hope you all are having happy and restful days. Today, I bring you a song that is by no means new or a hidden gem, but instead a song that I have come across recently and am just loving. This song is perfectly smooth and calming, but at the same time makes you groove to it. The name perfectly describes the song I think.

Q&A With Great Good Fine Ok

Uncategorized

While they were in town on tour with Panama Wedding and Scavenger Hunt (review of the show here), we were also able to sneak some questions in with Great Good Fine Ok. Here is a little Q&A.

The Lucky Velvet: Tour started last night in Boston (amazing set by the way)- what/where are you looking forward to?

Jon: Thanks! A couple nights ago we played to a sold out crowd at Bowery Ballroom in NYC. That was really special for us! It’s such a short tour that we are super excited about every upcoming show!
TLV: What is your favorite place or venue you have played so far in your career? Dream place or venue yet to be played?
J: The Fillmore in San Fran, Koko in London, Mohawk in Austin…so many amazing venues!! I would love to play at Red Rocks in Denver and most certainly Madison Square Garden in NYC.
TLV: What instruments do you play and what was the first song you learned on said instruments?
Luke: Any and all keyboard and percussion instruments (drum set, piano, vibraphone, etc). The first songs I learned were really simple melodies out of beginner instructional books. I started piano lessons when I was 6. I suppose “the computer” should count as an instrument that I play as well. Oh, also, a little bit of flute (my mom is a flute teacher!)
J: I play guitar.  The first song I learned was “Friend of the Devil” by The Grateful Dead.
TLV: What are you listening to right now that people might be surprised by?
J: Justin Bieber… I have a mild case of Bieber Fever.
L: Rage Against The Machine.
TLV: “Easy Lover” just came out a couple of weeks ago- was this is the works before you guys decided to go on tour together?
J: We decided to do the cover after the tour was booked, but I think we might have done it even if there was no tour.  It was just too perfect! Peter and I sound eerily like Phil Collins and Philip Bailey.
TLV: You guys have some very interesting and entertaining music videos- will there be a video for Easy Lover? What should we expect?
J: Oh yes…you’ll just have to wait and see, but you wont be disappointed… 😉
TLV: I love the graphics you have- do you do them yourself? Any significance in what appears to be a space theme?
J: The album art for our 2 EPs were done by some really talented artists from the UK, but the rest of the stuff is all Luke. He is a really amazing graphic designer!  Space just seems to feel like the music in a lot of ways.
L: I’ve had a fascination with space since I was young. I had this poster above my dresser that was an artist’s interpretation of what would be like to look up at Jupiter standing on the surface of its moon Io, which is covered in volcanos.
TLV: Your new single Take It Or Leave It was released in September- what’s up next in the studio?
J: We are constantly writing, so just waiting for the right one to release next!
TLV: Since we are The “Lucky” Velvet, do you have any good luck charms or pre-show rituals?
J: We do a ‘hands in the middle’ kind of chant thing before each show called “The Deesh Diamond”. Helps us calibrate our inner body diamonds.
L: Lots of slapping. Stimulates adrenal response.

So basically, John is just the same as everyone else in the world that has Bieber Fever right now, and we may have an exciting new music video in our future. Great Good Fine Ok can be found at the links below. Make sure to give this Q&A some love if you got any mild enjoyment out of it.

A Chat With Panama Wedding

Uncategorized

I was lucky enough to sit down with Peter Kirk, the frontman of Panama Wedding, before the first show of the band’s first-ever headliner tour. Not only did the tour kick off in Boston, but it was a sold out show (you can read my review of the show here.) Here is what Peter had to say.

The Lucky Velvet: Alright, first of all, are you excited for your tour that’s starting tonight?

Peter Kirk: I’m very excited!

TLV: Is there anywhere/anything that you’re looking forward to specifically?

PK: Definitely Bowery Ballroom tomorrow [NYC, 12/1] just because it’s our hometown. We’ve never played Madison, Wisconsin before…

TLV: Yeah, that’s an interesting location.

PK: That’s definitely something I’m curious about. I’m looking forward to Chicago as well, I have a lot of close friends who live out there.

TLV: Are you guys planning on going out to the west coast at any time?

PK: I want to really bad!

TLV: Is there anywhere you haven’t played yet that you’re excited to go to at some point?

PK: I think we’ve hit most of the major cities out on the west coast, it’s more venues. We’ve never played The Troubadour, we’ve never done The Roxy, some of the more iconic venues in LA would be really cool. We want to get out west as soon as possible.

TLV: Yeah definitely. So what are you listening to right now that people might be surprised by?

PK: Well… I’ve sort of just transitioned to Christmas phase right now.

TLV: Ah, yes.

PK: Everything in my apartment is these old vinyl records that I found at a thrift store that was these old Christmas records. In the van we listen to a lot of Z100. I really like the new Ellie Goulding song, “On My Mind”. That’s really good.

TLV: Her new album is really good.

PK: I’m always walking down the street and I have Ellie Goulding on and I try to look so cool, but I’m not.

TLV: Yeah, we all try. You need a Ellie Goulding Jingle Bells remix.

PK: Yeah, some Ellie Goulding Christmas music.

TLV: So what instruments do you play and what was the first song you learned to play on said instrument?

PK: Good question. I play keyboards, guitar, and I sing. I play bass but I don’t do it live. The first song I learned on guitar was “Come As You Are” by Nirvana.

TLV: Nice, that’s a good one!

PK: It was the first day, and I told my friends I learned it and they didn’t believe me. I came over with my guitar and shattered their minds. It’s also the easiest song you could ever learn. And then I think on piano I learned “Fur Elise” or something.

TLV: Right, classic.

PK: Yeah, the standard. Or “Rondo Alla Turca”. One of those.

TLV: Okay, cool. So Scavenger Hunt just did a remix of “Infinite High.”

PK: They did.

TLV: Do you like it? What are your thoughts?

PK: I do like it. I think it’s amazing, and I’m very happy they did it.

TLV: Are there any other remixes of your stuff that you’ve heard that you’re like, “Oh that’s so cool!”

PK: We just got one the other day from another group that is really cool, Bee’s Knees.

TLV: Is it weird when you hear remixes of your songs, or is it kind of flattering?

PK: It’s cool, it’s totally flattering. I mean, if it’s weird we just won’t talk about it.

[Everybody laughs.]

PK: We’ll just ignore it.

TLV: I always wondered about that. So, “Easy Lover”.

PK: Yeah!

TLV: It’s awesome. Was that something that was already in the works before you guys decided to go on tour together?

PK: We talked about it before the tour, but it wasn’t something that was planned very far in advance. Our front-of-house sound person, Chris, when he knew we were touring together he said “Oh you should do a Phil Collins cover of ‘Easy Lover’” and we were like “Huh?” And then when we looked closely at the idea, we were like “This is a really brilliant idea.” So we just came over to Luke’s place, and John was there, and we just did it, and it sounded really good.

TLV: So it was something  where you were already going on tour together and you thought “Oh this could be fun.”

PK: Yeah, you know we just thought we’re going on tour together, we should use this as an opportunity to do something fun and exciting for the fans, and exciting to us. Yeah, that was really it. And luckily the song has gotten some good love online, and people are playing it, and it’s cool.

TLV: Yeah, I really like it. It’s good.

PK: I hope Phil hears it some day.

TLV: Yeah, maybe. You can just pop it into his inbox. So, “Into Focus” just came out this month.

PK: Yeah!

TLV: Tell us about it.

PK: “Into Focus” is our latest EP, and it’s really a collection of songs that have been developed over the last year or so, just touring a lot, playing a lot of shows. We were working on a full length for a while, and then there was this gap between “Parallel Play” and we felt like we needed to put out music again, and we didn’t know exactly what to do but we had this group of songs that we really liked and we just sat down one day and said “Let’s put out another EP.” You know, the first EP was really good for us, and so far this has been good for us too.

TLV: Is this a set of songs that has a sort of similar inspiration behind them?

PK: Well, I think with “Parallel Play” there was “All Of The People” which was the first song Panama Wedding put out, and that song created a lot of excitement. And then “Parallel Play” was just “Okay, let’s package some other songs with ‘All Of The People’” and it was just a random assortment of songs we had done that we thought were the best at the time. “Into Focus” was a little more strategic about picking songs. There was a much broader group of songs that we all sat down and said “Oh, this is the best song.” I think aesthetically they’re a little more cohesive.

TLV: I read somewhere that this collection of songs is a little more about your transition from your old job [in the financial industry.]

PK: A little bit. The song “Into Focus” is a little bit about that. I think these songs were a little more personal, they were a little more intentional.  With a lot of songs in “Parallel Play”, [for example] “Uma” was just kind of an experiment and turned into a song. Whereas a song like “Into Focus” came to the table and I had a specific idea in mind and I knew how I wanted it to sound live, I knew how I wanted it to be produced, and I did it. Same thing with “A Brand New Life”, same thing with “Infinite High”, it just felt like a more intentional effort.

TLV: Along the lines of leaving your old job, I’m in college so it’s kind of this huge shift from what you think might be what you want to what you actually want.

PK: Yeah, exactly. The lyric is “I didn’t know this was the ending I was told.” I think it’s just something a lot of people can relate to.

TLV: Definitely. Was there a defining moment where you said “Music is what I’m gonna do, this is what I’m pursuing.”

PK: Not really, I think what happens is that you graduate and you get a job (hopefully) and your step one, at least for me, was to get A job that paid a decent amount of money that I could have a certain lifestyle, a certain level of independence, not live at home… So you get a job and it becomes integrated into your lifestyle, and if you do a job for a few years it’s really hard to switch into something different. For me, I always really loved music and I was always gonna record music and put out music. But I didn’t have the slightest idea how to do it full-time, I didn’t know financially how I could possibly make it work. So I just said “Okay, well I’m gonna work my job and I’m also gonna do music on the side and if something ever comes of it, great. If something doesn’t , I’ll still have a job.” And then for me it was just a matter of putting out “All Of The People”. I had already put it out under my own name and released through Gmail to my small, sad little group of fans (mostly my friends and family), you know and it lived on the Internet for a few months and nothing happened. And then I got a manager, Seth, and the This Fiction crew and released it under the name Panama Wedding and got it to the right blogs and it just sort of exploded and from there. I had labels that were offering to sign me and then I was like “Okay, I could do this now.” That’s really what happened.

TLV: That’s awesome, that’s the dream.

PK: It’s the dream, but there was never this okay, lose yourself in the music Eminem moment, like I’m gonna get really into this.

TLV: No “Eight Mile”.

PK: I just kept doing it to the point where it just happened.

TLV: So what’s up next?

PK: Well, the priority now is just to have a really good tour and then the end of December is holidays so I’m going out to San Francisco, but just writing and recording more, and hopefully trying to figure out what our plans are for next year. We’ve had a few things that have bubbled up that we’re sort of trying to figure out. But ideally touring again and getting out west.

TLV: Full length?

PK: Yeah, I mean we’ve put out five new songs so now we have nine songs out there in the world. Yeah, we definitely will put out a full length at some point, but it’s not a huge priority.

TLV: Right, I mean you just put out an EP.

PK: Yeah. Hopefully it will be out next year.

TLV: Okay so last question. Since we are The Lucky Velvet, do you have any good luck charms or pre-show rituals?

PK: Well, before the shows we say two words, and it’s any two words. Like for Boston we could say “Larry Bird” or we could say “Red Sox” or something. Boston-y things. We just say two words together. It originated because Brett used to be in a band called I Love Monsters and they used to do that. He had this idea to do it and we were like yeah okay, and now we just do it. It’s fun. That’s it.

Be sure to check out Panama Wedding’s latest EP, “Into Focus” that was just released last month, and also feel free to go give them some love if you are digging their sound! Also give this interview some love if you got any mild enjoyment out of it. I had a fantastic time doing it, and I hope you enjoy reading it. Stay tuned in the next couple of days for the interview I also did with Great Good Fine Ok, who Panama Wedding is currently on tour with.

Panama Wedding, Great Good Fine Ok, Scavenger Hunt- 30 November 2015

Concert Series

The Lucky Velvet was able to pop out for one more show before the impending doom of finals week, and let me tell you I was definitely glad to be able to catch this one. I found myself once again back at The Great Scott, my favorite little pub/concert venue, for a sold out show on a Monday night right after Thanksgiving. This show was the very first stop on the tour, and this tour is Panama Wedding’s first ever headliner.

Scavenger Hunt was the first act of the night. I had never listened to any of their stuff before, but they are definitely a band I want to check out in the future. The lead singer’s voice is beautiful and she has so much charisma when she’s on stage. The whole band really played into the crowd and fed off of their energy, which was pretty high considering that usually the crowd has little to no idea who the opener is. They put on a fantastic set and I was pleasantly surprised. Their sound has a nice 80’s pop vibes going on, and I think that works really well with the other acts on this tour. This group had fantastic stage presence which was another thing I think really took their set to the next level.

Great Good Fine Ok was next up and I can honestly say this was one of the most fun sets from a band I have experienced in quite a while. John has the most amazing falsetto and that fact that he does that for such a long period of time and every day amazes me. That is some serious talent. They also have some seriously great dance moves which just adds to the amount of character emitting out of them and onto the crowd. Everyone in the building was amped and it was because they were just having so much fun. They use really cool light up things as part of their show that I won’t get into for the sake of ~mystery~ but again it was just like one thing after another made it that much more awesome. Not to mention, the glittery jackets and kimono. Great set. Would love to see these guys in action again.

And then the main event, Panama Wedding. I think they built their set list perfectly, with some of their more chill songs leading the way into the second half of the set. Once they played that first pumped up song, they did not slow down- and neither did the audience. There were tons of people that were just going all out for this set. I mean, jumping and dancing around in circles. This sounds weird but it was kind of amazing to see that these people were literally having the time of their lives during this set, and that made me happy. Other things about this set that made me happy: When Peter Kirk jumped on the drums sitting right next to him. I love when the lead singers play the drums. It just adds something. Great Good Fine Ok came back up to do “Easy Lover” (no one was surprised) and oh my god it was just amazing. Like I want to watch that song live over and over again now. First of all, it’s an amazing song and these two acts are super talented and then you put that into a live show? So much yes. And then to top it off, they finished with “All Of The People” accompanied by special guest Alex Caplow of Magic Man, who I had seen lurking around all night so again, no one was surprised. Still cool though. Overall, the tracks sounded great live, especially the new ones.

Great show, great times, great acts, just Great (Good Fine Ok.) Don’t hate me for that. This tour is a relatively short one, but try to get out there and see it if you can! Also stay tuned, because I was lucky enough to sit down with Peter Kirk of Panama Wedding and ask him a few questions, as well as get a few in there with Great Good Fine Ok. These posts should be coming your way soon!

Easy Lover (Phil Collins & Philip Bailey Cover) // Great Good Fine Ok & Panama Wedding

Cover Corner

If you want to be awkwardly dancing in a chair while sitting in a public space, then this is the song for you (and also me.) These two artists have gone and revamped and 80s pop song to maintain the 80s vibe, while adding in several elements that make it current with today’s musical styles. I’m not surprised to see a cover like this from them because their original material is also very 80s influenced, but honestly that just means they’re the perfect acts to do a cover like this. The massive amounts of falsetto running through this track mixed with the updated electro sounds blend perfectly together, and obviously there are some fantastic harmonies going on so I’m loving it.

This track is being released just ahead of an upcoming tour Panama Wedding and Great Good Fine Ok are embarking on together, and your truly will not only be covering the Boston date, but I will also be interviewing BOTH acts! You’re excited, I’m excited, they might be excited, these are exciting times. If anyone out there has any questions they are dying to ask of these two bands, let me know.

Different Kind Of Love // Kid Runner

If You Listen To Nothing Else Today

Hello and happy Friday to all of you lovely people. I have the perfect track to send you into the weekend with a little pep in your step. This is a brand new release (i.e. today) from Kid Runner and it is such a tune I thought everyone needed to know about it right now. Right from the beginning it has a great whistle line that gives the track this kind of care-free/upbeat vibe, and then everything else comes in and I’m literally dancing in my seat as I write this. There are some awesome lines with cool syncopations and melodies that make it more unique than your standard alt-pop song, and the male and female vocals blend really well together. This band has already had some big accomplishments, and with a new EP ahead, I am very interested to see what’s up next. So do a little dancing and have a good weekend!
