X Ambassadors – 24 October 2015

Concert Series

X Ambassadors @ The Royale // Boston, MA

Finally, after trying so hard for so long, I was able to get out and see X Ambassadors live again. As some of you know, I was meant to see them over the summer, but sadly that show was cancelled because Sam Harris fell ill. Everyone was sad, people shed tears, tragedy occurred. But it’s okay because it finally happened again, in Boston where the love affair started.

Some background on my history with this band, because it will soon become relevant (by some I mean all): I saw them live for the first time back in November 2013, when they opened for The Mowgli’s and I’d never even heard of them before and I didn’t even want to see the headliner but my friend had free tickets and who am I to pass that up? I was nothing short of captivated by X Ambassadors’ set, and I immediately started listening to them when I went home. Then January rolls around, and I’m going to another concert that my friend and I had bought tickets for months and months in advance, and we do we find out is opening for this show? That’s right, X AMBASSADORS (this is the same friend as the previously mentioned show funnily enough.) They kill it, and we are two of maybe 10 people in the crowd that have any inkling who these guys are. They announce they are coming back to do their first ever headliner in April, and you bet your ass we were there 4 months later, at a sold out show at the Great Scott down in Allston. Earlier that day in April, they also played an acoustic set at a college nearby, which of course we also went to. From an opening slot at Paradise Rock Club to the headliner at a sold out show at The Royale, it’s been a great year and a half with these guys already. And now, some thoughts about the performance.

When I promised the above monologue would be relevant, I mostly say that because of the opener, Kevin Garrett. For those of you that follow me on Twitter, you already know where I’m going with this. I legitimately have not been this excited about discovering a new artist at a show since the day I discovered X Ambassadors. This guy is so incredibly talented, my jaw literally dropped several times. His falsetto is flawless, and reminds me a lot of James Vincent McMorrow, who is obviously the king of the male upper vocal range. His sound feels so dreamy yet kind of has this darker element to it at the same time. As should be expected, I’ve been listening to him non-stop since the show, and I have to be honest when I say his live set blows his studio tracks out of the water. And in my personal opinion, that is just the best thing.

Skylar Grey was up next, and wow that girl is talented. Her voice is unreal, like holy cow that range is next level. Her music wasn’t really my taste, but I definitely still enjoyed her set because it’s so easy to see how creative and talented she is. She had a little portion in her set where she played snippets of a bunch of songs she helped write, and I was very surprised because all of these song have been like chart-topping singles. Respect.

X Ambassadors. AFTER ALL THIS TIME. I’m pretty sure I was jumping and squealing as these guys were taking the stage, and I was so engrossed in the set that I didn’t even take notes so these thought may be sporadic. They still have that insane energy that made me fall in love with them in the first place, and Sam Harris still has the same dance moves. They all played/sang flawlessly. Honestly this show just made me so proud of them because I’ve been watching them for a very long time, so I don’t have many technical things to note. Go see this show because they are amazing performers, and that’s what peaked my interest in them in the first place. My only qualm was some set list choices, just because I miss the old material and they didnt play my favorite song off VHS :'(.

This tour has just begun, and you can still get tickets to some dates! Go here for more info.

Monday // Matt Corby

If You Listen To Nothing Else Today

I about to make a bold statement, but I feel confident in saying it: Matt Corby has my favorite voice in the entire music industry. There, I said it. Matt has been gone for far, far too long and he has finally decided to grace us mere mortals with a new single (which might mean new album!) Everyone knows I am a sucker for beautiful harmonies and vocals, and this is the perfect track for this because Matt has recorded this song using entirely his own voice. That’s right, no guitar, no kick drum, just him laying down his own harmonies to himself. Now that I have gushed about the wonder that is Matt Corby, listen to this new track. Over and over.

Fools // Wild Child

Weekly Obsession

artworks-000122061136-5h8a1s-t500x500

In my humble opinion, Wild Child could not have picked a better time to drop this album. This is the perfect soundtrack to walking down the street with the leaves changing colors on a brisk fall day. The vibe of the entire album is so chill, but not in a way that makes you want to fall asleep- more in the way that you just want to hang out in the sun and listen to it. The vocals are never too much, if you know what I mean. Nothing about this album is overkill, and I think that’s what I like most about it. The lead singer’s voice reminds me a lot of that of Daughter, and what I like about it most is that she floats with her voice- nothing about it is intrusive, and the tone in her voice is just beautiful. Honestly this is the kind of album I would want playing throughout my house at all hours of the day. If that were a thing I did, here are the top 5 tracks I would have on repeat.

Fools- If you want one of the “rock” driven songs on the album, and also the title track! Obviously it’s the title track for a reason.

Meadows- If you want to hear absolutely perfect harmonies & riffs. This song is the reason I’m in love with her voice.

Break Bones- If you want my favorite song on the whole album. I love the syncopations going on with the vocals, I love the vocals as a whole, I love that the back tracking matches the tone of the lyrics, I love it.

Reno- If you want to know what song I am learning to play on guitar next… Some more beautiful vocals, and a track that is most beautiful in its simplicity.

Oklahoma- If you want some more killer harmonies, some ukulele action (I think), and some really sweet lyrics.

I had a very hard time narrowing it down to 5, but I chose the ones that I think are the most comprehensive of the whole album. Fools is out now on iTunes and Spotify, and is available for purchase here.

WILD // Troye Sivan

Weekly Obsession

It’s time to bring Weekly Obsession back, don’t you think? You all know I have them in abundance, so I will be having two installments for this week. You can expect the next one on Wednesday. Today, as I promised in an earlier post last week, I will be discussing the glorious album (EP???) that is Troye Sivan’s lastest work. As I also said in this previous post, I have mad respect for this guy because I feel like with a lot of people that try to dabble in an area that they didn’t get famous in originally, it can be hard for them to be taken seriously, or maybe they aren’t even really any good and are just getting the hype because people already know them. I don’t think that’s the case at all with Troye, because first of all his music is by no means mainstream, and we all know that if he wanted to get the exposure and the radio air he could’ve produced more pop-like music. But no, he went and made the kind of music he would be proud of and that was genuinely his artistic creation, and it’s so good and I just respect that. Enough rambling, here are the tracks.

WILD- If you want to hear an insanely catchy single with a fantastic melody line and perfectly danceable beat. You can read more thoughts here.

BITE- If you want to hear some chill-inducing harmonies that you all know I’m a sucker for. There’s so much more to it than that but that’s my favorite part.

FOOLS- If you want a song that is actually kind of sweet if you think about it, but also kind of sad. And also paired with a sick beat and great vocals.

EASE- If you want to hear a great collab with Broods, like I’ve never heard two voices that blend together better.

THE QUIET- If you want to hear something that is the opposite of quiet. It’s not crazy, but it definitely has a strong beat at times.

DKLA- If you want to hear a track that has a much more deep and dark feel to it.

Great album, give it a listen.

The Neighbourhood- 5 October 2015

Concert Series
The Neighbourhood @ House of Blues // Boston, MA

The Neighbourhood @ House of Blues // Boston, MA

There’s nothing better than going to a concert on a Monday night, amirite? Especially one that has doors at a reasonable hour and that is close to your apartment. But these are not the only reasons we love the HOB (as it is so affectionately called.) It’s probably the biggest venue in Boston you can go to before you start playing arenas, so it’s good for bigger bands but still gives that feel of a more intimate setting. Plus, I love the vibe of the place and they have lots of great spots to chill if you don’t want to be in the middle of it all. It’s also literally across the street from Fenway, which is just cool.

So first up was HUNNY, and I showed up about half way through their set because I literally ran straight from work (~obligations~), but what I did hear, I was very into. I felt like they have a more upbeat, pop sound going on than the acts they opened for, but we all know I love that stuff too so it was great. I thought they rounded out the show very nicely and I would not be surprised to see them at another show in the future. They’ve been getting a lot of play recently on KROQ (alternative radio station in LA for those that don’t know, very famous), so I can imagine they will start to get more publicity going soon. Plus they’ve got good material, and you know what happens when bands have good music.

And then came Bad Suns, who I really enjoy and who I’ve seen live before. The last time I saw them, they were kind of just starting out so they hadn’t really developed their stage presence. This time around though, totally different story. They had this entire persona going on, like the lead singer had this leather jacket on with his hair slicked back and his t shirt tucked into his jeans. He had the cool, mysterious front man look going on and he looked very comfortable performing. They haven’t put out any new material since the last time I saw them, but I thought it was nice to see how they’ve been playing around with the old stuff. Musically, the band was on point. There were some really great choices made vocally, and some choices I thought were a little questionable, but what is a performance without some room for artistic license? Sometimes the falsetto was a little off and sometimes in was so on point, but he definitely had times where he hit the same notes in full voice. Overall though, really good set.

And then, the main event, The Neighbourhood. Again, I’ve seen these guys before. I’ll admit, I could have been more excited for the show. But when they came on and started playing, I got so excited because I had forgotten just how good they are. The things that man can do with his voice are amazing, honestly. His upper vocal range is crazy, like the notes he hits and the amount of times he just kind of yells into the mic is unreal. And when I say he’s yelling, it’s probably not yelling and is very stylistic and works perfectly. The stage presence from the band as a whole is one of the best I’ve ever seen, and the showmanship from Jesse, the frontman, is on another level. This guy has grown out his hair and dyed in bleach blonde, and it still works. He came out wearing sunglasses, and it worked. They did a break in the middle of the show, and he came out wearing nothing but a fur coat and sang into an autotuned mic for about 10 minutes. AND IT WORKED. The autotune portion of the set was so amazing, I was literally in awe that someone would even come up with something like that. This was also when he chose to do some songs from the last EP they put out, and there was even rapping involved. They played a lot of new songs from the album set to drop at the end of this month, and I am SO excited for this material. It sounds more pop influenced than the old stuff, but it is still very much their own thing. My love for The Neighbourhood has been restored.

WILD // Troye Sivan

If You Listen To Nothing Else Today

I have so many things to say about this song and about Troye Sivan. Mostly what I want to say is that I’ve had this song on repeat because the melody is perfection and it’s always stuck in my head. And then as if that isn’t enough to suck me in, the backbeat has this fantastic bass and a rhythm that makes me want to groove forever and the synth pad elements that make this song everything. What I have to say about Troye Sivan is that I have massive respect for him because he was already a pretty public figure on YouTube and has made this transition into the music world, but he didn’t do it the way a lot of other public figures do that transition. As in, he didn’t just enter into the world of mass pop music and radio play and all that, he is making music that fits him and that is genuinely unique and really freaking good to be honest. You go Troye. (Clearly I have strong feelings, so keep your eye on Weekly Obsession…)

Throwback Thursday

Okay so I am finally reinstating Throwback Thursday because let’s be honest, we’ve gone much too long without it. I go to this coffee shop every Saturday with my roommate and there is this really cute barista there that takes over the playlist sometimes and every time he does, it starts with this song. And every time, I FREAK OUT because this song was one of the staples of my middle school years and I love it so much. It’s perfectly rock and angst and everything that middle school is and the cute barista plays it.

Addicted // The Night Café

If You Listen To Nothing Else Today

~I’m addicted to this song, and you know it~ Cheesy but true because this song is so great. It’s like dreamy but still a song to groove to.It starts out and I thought we were going to be in the middle of an 80’s pop song, and then everything else drops in and I remember why I am so excited about this band. I have been obsessed with this guy’s voice since day one, like the day they were still Canvas and dropped “Growing Up”. I can’t think of a way to describe the guitar hooks other than literally nuts, just so good. I legitimately gasped when I saw that this group dropped another song because I’ve been waiting to see if they could put out something as good as the last one, and look at that, they did. The harmonies thrown in just give this track a little something extra, and every time I hear it everything feels like it has finally fallen into place. Please send more new music our way because we are LOVING IT.
